Tear my CyberSec plan apart

Hey guys. Just coming finishing up my second year as a "Jack of all Trades" sysadmin/IT and after Passing my Sec+ my boss has approved my request to change my title to Sec Admin and work mostly full time on Securing our network as these past 2 years we've seen pretty large growth with at least 3 ransomware attacks and one employee installing bitcoin miners and getting away with it because literally nothing is logged.
Our Company consists of our main office with 9 adminstrators and 3 IT guys. Me and another guy, and our manager. We have a 30 person call center in the building with a remote call center connected back here. We serve as a telecom with roughly 40,000 users. Since we have a bunch of phone equipment and such, We have 6 almost identical Colos that each have the work divided between them, but they do not act as failovers. If one Colo loses internet/power, those 10k or so customers are SOL
Our security stance is this - and I quote "Don't get attacked". Hasn't worked so far. We do at the very least have a Fortigate
Leads me to the CyberSec plan. My first project was adding and configuring a WSUS server so our servers that were last updated in 2018 can at least be a little more secure. I just now finished it and the documentation and now My director and CEO have thrown their full support behind whatever I suggest So i'm kinda insanely excited to just get to get after it with very little redtape. I've spent the last few weeks planning out what I think we need to at least get us up to "Mediocre" standing.
Below is my list and my explanations. If all is good I will present this to our C-suite as our CyberSecuity Initiative. This list has gone through several changes and I know that some is way too much or I have the totally wrong idea on what this stuff is. As title says, feel free to tear it apart. I'm excited to learn all of this stuff.
9/15 Updated Cybersec Initiative Current List: -Full Risk/Impact analysis with a Disaster Recovery Plan // Was very surprised to hear we don't have any of this. We just got hit with a hurricane and we were down for almost a week because no disaster plans or fail overs
-Entire Network Map with help of LibreNMS or other Net tools // We don't have any maps of our network. Most of what I know is because I have to ask where a server is and I keep a notebook of it around.
-Audit security of our POS kiosk systems // We have a few kiosks out that process transactions and I know nothing of any security controls. Would it be a good idea to add these to our domain as well?
-Contain the ridiculous VM sprawl // We have VMs that we have no idea what/if they do anything. Need to contain this
-Combine our Call center and Main DC, Full permission Audit, add Group policy restrictions (Time of Day, Lockout), add all COLO servers to domain, add all technicians to domain // This is a big one. No point in my opinion of having 2 domains when one is literally one group called "Call center Agents". None of our field guys are added to our domain, and none of our COLO servers are on our domain. Group policy updates to limit time of day and password policies
-Create a honeypot/net // This one is mostly for fun
-Full rollout of Security Onion // One sensor at each COLO plus our main office network. Wazuh/Malwarebytes configured on every PC/Server we have.
-Harden our outward facing Webservers // We don't do much as our websites are administered by another company, But i'd like to talk with them about it
-Disable SNMPv2 or change community string // I know that our printers still have this
-Create .iso of "stock OS" with malwarebytes/Wazuh already installed, system alreay hardened // More of a convenience
-Configure Guest Wifi using best practices
-Audit/Use Backups // I know we have backups of some things but not everything. Set this up with raid and/or offsite backup
-Implement 2FA/SSO on user PCs // Outlook 2FA and SSO for some of our resources
-Turn on firewall logging // Thats right. No logs on firewall at all.
-Implement security policies on our Outlook stuff // Phishing detection, logging, etc
-Train users on phishing campaigns and such // This wouldn't be until next year during annual company training
TLDR: I'm now a sec admin and I'm looking for critique on if/why the above controls wouldn't work or are too much/overkill on our network that takes "Security through obscurity" to a new level. Feel free to fuck me up y'all.

Anyway, she visited one of zose countries again (to visit my brother) and that too without telling me. I told her not to go because of the expensive plane tickets (she has been pretending to be "poor" all these years. well, not THAT poor. "middle class" poor. 🤣). I certainly considered the plane tickets expensive. It cost more than 1 lakh rupees (1,00,000) for a two way trip (which I considered to be a lot at that time). So if I would have gone too, it would have been more than 2 lakh rupees ( rupees are also jewish apparently ). Money that could have been spent on other things (jews have been emailing Satan recently with suggestions like "spend money on experiences, not things". 🤣). Of course, now I think money and the financial system is fake and designed exclusively for Satan but only YOU will know whether that is the case or not. 🤷‍♂️
Oh, and because she was planning on going without telling me, she even agreed to give me some "mummy money" (20,000 rupees) to buy some "pyramid scheme money" (bitcoin) which I then used to buy an antminer s1. Pretty neat pyramid scheme, huh? Has cool miners and everything. 🤣

I mentioned amazon above. They recently VERY actively participated in the "Q psyop" by showing the following riddle to Satan/me in a "riddle quiz" (or whatever you want to call it) that they had in the "fun zone" section of their app. Here's the riddle as I remember it.

I bet they were hoping that I would correctly answer it, but I unintentionally answered it incorrectly as "E". Otherwise it was supposed to be "U". You know, "QU". "Q you". Calling me Q. Q from LGBTQ. 😐
Anyway, I didn't even look at the list of answers properly and had very quickly decided that the answer was "E" because in my mind I imagined the letters going from left to right (in a queue 🤣) and the answer would have been "E" in that case. The letter "E" would have been following "Q". By the way, there is no "E" in any of my real life names but there is one in "JEW". 🤣 Maybe that's why a jewess was pretending to be a bot and other jews were referring to her as EBOT in the Q research 8chan board (mentioned in one of my old posts). They were spelling "ABOT" as "EBOT". 🤣🤷‍♂️
I am also guessing that "QATAR" in the above riddle is supposed to mean something since it was in all caps. "Q a rat" maybe (country names are fake apparently, as I mentioned in my previous post)? Like the rat from the movie Ratatouille? 🤣 Even my mother was once mispronouncing Qatar as "Quatar", and I corrected her saying it's QAtar and not QUatar. But yes, once again, "QU" or "QUA" (Q you, A). 😐 Like I mentioned in my previous post, I now believe she is also a "psyop" participant and she continues to actively participate in the psyop.
Just recently she threw away a pack of masala powder just to make me angry. I had already started cooking when I realized that the pack was missing. At first I thought she may have just hidden it, so I searched everywhere but when I couldn't find it I realized she had mostly likely thrown it away. I am not talking to her at all right now (for obvious reasons 😐) but did manage to indicate that I was angry because of the missing masala powder (not that she didn't already know. it was part of the "plan". trust the plan. 🤣) and she eventually admitted that she had thrown it away, apparently because the pack was "completely open". There were long expired packs of various masala powders lying around (still are) that were actually "completely open" that she didn't bother to throw out but she threw away a brand new pack that I had bought. 🤷‍♂️
Should also mention that everytime I brought up the "psyop", her dialogue was something like, "Internet people are tricksing you-internet people are tricksing you". 🤣🤷‍♂️ "Internet people" are "tricksing" me apparently. 🤣 Well, I am translating but she was using the word "tricks". 🤷‍♂️
I believe I have also figured out what one of my real life names actually means. One is supposed to be calling me an "objectophile" (like "QU". "Objectophile U".) and the other one (the one in my birth certificate, ID cards, etc.) is supposed to mean something like "You are a fool/simpleton, devil". Any jew here willing to confirm? 🤣

Already mentioned a video game above, but will be mentioning moar video games here under this heading. As I mentioned in my previous post, they are also using their time machines when making video games. I also mentioneded that I could be living in a simulation for all I know and you could all be NPCs. Later I remembered a video game that I didn't play just because the story/plot had "simulation" in it. I then checked out the plot again on wikipedia and noticed that it mentions "time travel" also. 🤣

I have both the game and the DLC in my Steam library but have never played them. I bought them during a sale or something. They were being sold as a bundle (Humble Bundle maybe) but I was only interested in Saints Row The Third.
I should also mention The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game has some cannibal witches who eat kids (they ate grown ups too; they didn't discriminate. 🤣). Oh yes, I was talking about The Simpsons. I remember seeing posts right here on /conspiracy speculating whether The Simpsons creators know about the existence of real life time machines because many episodes seem to depict future events. Well, no need to speculate any longer, they do have real life time machines. But it's not just The Simpsons creators. It's all jews. Be it Hollywood, Bollywood, Tollywood, etc. Maybe you can even ask them during comic-con or something if you are a "poor" jew and do not know about the existence of real life time machines.
I now also believe that the boat painting in The Simpsons living room is based on something that Satan painted not long after the shit stick incident. After the shit stick incident that I mentioned in my previous post, my mother agreed to reconnect our TV cable connection on the condition that I attend a religious summer school. That's where I painted a ship which was supposed to be like the ships from Assassins Creed Black Flag. It was supposed to be an art "class" but there was only one and they were like "paint whatever you want to paint". Were they expecting Satan to paint something Satanic? 🤣 I remember the kid next to me was painting an alien. Large sheet of paper but he was painting a small alien in the middle of it leaving the rest of the sheet blank. 🤷‍♂️
Anyway, in case of The Simpsons, the painting is that of "a boat" (wink-wink-nudge-nudge?) but it's very similar to the ship painting that I painted. If you really do not know about the existence of time machines and other advanced tech maybe you can even ask the creators of The Simpsons (in the next comic con or something). You can say something like "a conspiracy nut on /conspiracy claiming to be Satan was also claiming that you have real life time machines and the boat painting is based on something he painted at a religious summer school after a shit stick incident and that you got rid of the Apu character because he wanted The Simpsons cancelled because he got the impression that you were being anti-Trump and pro-Hillary...". 🤣🤷‍♂️

Was four or five years old when it happened. The zipper of the shorts that I was wearing, got stuck on my partially mutilated foreskin. I was crying in pain even though there was no bleeding. Later the same nurse who most likely mutilated my dick was telling me to wear underpants as if I could conjure them out of thin air.

My motorcycle that I mentioned in my previous post was seized by the cops (I used to think that the local cops are useless but now I think that they are just fake) using "Coronavirus" as an excuse. And when recently looking at the details of the "Foghat" album "The Best of Foghat", I noticed the song with the title "Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was A Fool)". I have been to the cops twice to get back my seized motorcycle. First time I went was on April 1 (april fools day). I was planning on not going a third time and just let the fake cops keep my motorcycle. After all, they are jews, the motorcycle was made by jews and even the money I used to buy the motorcycle was "jew money". And I noticed that there is also the song with the title "Take It Or Leave It". 🤣 Oh, and now I see that there is also one with the title "Easy Money". 🤣

Centralized power always corrupts. When we decentralize money we decentralize power. That enables people to have more freedom.

This is a rumination on centralized institutions, why they fail and why decentralized money is so important.
Communism (dictatorship):
Pure Capitalism (unchecked by democratic laws):
 
Both pure capitalistic and communistic systems fail as they centralize and that leads to less freedom.
 
Democracy is meant to decentralize power. All people should have an equal voice about who leads, and term limits should keep those leaders accountable to the electorate.
The problem is that money disproportionately impacts elections and makes them unfair. Foreign communistic systems use democracy against itself, influencing elections with money in order to destabilize them. On the local level, regional power disenfranchises voters that they think will not reelect them.
In a democracy, the more you remove money from the election process, the more free those people will be.
The main principle is that no matter what system you have, where you have centralized power, the system fails. Money is at the core of power in our modern society. Attaining money is a game that we're all forced to play. The consequences of this game are the difference between slavery and freedom, growth or stagnation, life or death. This is why decentralized money is so important.
It must be decentralized in development (many developers) and have decentralized security (many miners or fair staking). It must be decentralized in operation (peer to peer, without central hubs) and it must have a decentralized record (immutable blockchain).
Decentralized money won't solve all of our problems. There will still be have and have-nots. There will still be racism and hatreds.
However, it could do a few important things:
It doesn't matter if the above solution is called Bitcoin Cash or any other name. I take no stock in what things are called. If it will do the above, then I will support it with my thoughts and actions.

Some of my thoughts on the future of Vertcoin

Hi Everyone,
Over the past few weeks, I've seen some unhappy comments here on Reddit. I think one of the trends in those comments is that the development team is quiet here on Reddit and perhaps that’s a just observation. So I felt the need to organize some of my thoughts and lay them out for all of my Reddit friends (that’s assuming I still have some).
So, if I were to believe some of the comments made here, Vertcoin is dead and buried. Developers are “in hiding”. I’m still active in our Discord almost daily and talk to many people there. I don’t feel that way in the slightest. I talk to fellow dev team members on a daily basis, and we’re progressing on the work we need to do right now, which is working on the security of our network.
Trying to maintain a secure, pure, honest, decentralized peer-to-peer Proof of Work currency is hard. Yes, there are easy solutions to the most obvious problem: introduce checkpointing, notarization or even master nodes. The attack vector of 51% attacks could be removed easily. But is the Vertcoin we would be left with really something unique?
When I joined this team, I learned about its goals. Its primary goal is a decentralized currency that tries to distribute the rewards of maintaining the ledger in as fair a manner as possible. Being able to begin and end your participation in consensus without permission, and using readily-available and affordable commodity hardware like a GPU.
I don’t think it’s easy to achieve, and the longer I’m part of this team and trying to figure this out, the harder it seems to become. But allowing consensus to be dominated by specialized, hard to acquire hardware - or entrusting the consensus partly or entirely to privileged consortia of nodes would be the true death of this project.
I honestly think that it’s worth it to continue down this road. And I will keep doing that because I think it’s interesting and because I am happy to be working together with some very capable people that are a part of the Vertcoin team. I think we have a good vibe going (despite all the negative comments thrown our way), which shows in the fact that a lot of team members have been with us since long. I’ve been with these guys for nearly 2 years and I’m still one of the rookies.
So first and foremost, our “Layer 1” has to be secure. Without that, there’s no point in building anything cool on top of it because it will break down. We temporarily removed ASICs and Nicehash dominance from our network by forking to Lyra2REv3, but we know this is no permanent solution. We have to figure out how we can best protect our network against specialized hardware and large pools of rented hash rate. This, to me, is our biggest challenge and our most prominent item to work on. To that effect, we’re actively working on a new Proof-of-Work algorithm dubbed Verthash, and have been doing so since last year. I expect this to materialize somewhere over the next 2 to 6 months. We are continuously making iterations on the design and have a proof-of-concept implementation in a Vertcoin Core build running on a forked testnet between our developers. We want to ensure its stability and that it does not interfere with any of the features currently available to Vertcoin users, like p2pool, pool mining in general, and SPV wallets like Electrum. Otherwise, we’ll have to keep iterating until it does. Once we’ve established that, and the design is final, we release a first testnet beta and all the source code to Verthash well before even planning a mainnet fork. We will make sure there is a GPU miner with that testnet release so everyone can try mining our new Proof-of-Work algorithm and see what kind of hash rate they can expect for their hardware. There’s actively being worked on this on a weekly basis. Some weeks more, some weeks less.
Another part of securing the base layer is keeping up-to-date with upstream Bitcoin Core improvements. We are currently behind a tad, but one of our community members is actively trying to bring us up to date with the latest upstream improvements, and it’s great to see someone stepping up like that. This person is also actively being supported by dev team members to complete his task and is noticing and taking away roadblocks to make this process easier in the future. I think this is a great initiative and an example that if you want to contribute to the development of Vertcoin, you can.
Lastly, there’s a bunch of other ideas we could work on. Since people haven’t heard about things in a while doesn’t mean they’re not still viable ideas (such as the Litbox concept, an updated, multi-platform One-click Miner, improved version of P2Pool, Vertcoin Assets, Stealth Transactions). In general, I think we have way more ideas than the capacity to implement them. If people at some point had the idea that these ideas were close to launching, I am sorry about that. I have never considered any of these to be release-imminent.
There are two ways to deal with the misalignment of ideas and resources: either lower your expectations and be realistic about what can be achieved, or hire people to speed up execution. Since we don’t have the funds for the latter, we have to stick to the former. Literally, everyone involved in Vertcoin does this in their spare time, and they work on what they think is the most interesting, challenging, what they can learn from the most, etcetera. It’s both the beauty of volunteers, that work on something they’re passionate about - and not just because they get paid - and also its biggest pitfall: people that lose interest, life getting in the way, and projects stalling.
We don’t have people we can dictate what to work on, that’s a reality we have to live with. So if you think: “these Vertcoin guys are a bunch of amateurs” - it’s because we are… at Vertcoin at least. Most of us have careers in fields very valuable to Vertcoin and bring in the knowledge that other projects have to spend an arm and a leg on.
In conclusion, I very much disagree with the fact that this project would be dead. I agree that there is a greatly reduced community activity on Reddit, Discord and other channels. It’s obvious that the market valuation of Vertcoin is down a lot. But neither of those indicate the death of this project. As long as people are passionate about its goals and are actively trying to achieve them, this project will go on. It’s been around for over five years, and I don’t see any reason to doubt it will be around for plenty of time to come.

Confessions of a Core Supporter

I remember as a slightly younger Bitcoiner watching videos and eating up everything I could about the subject. There was Roger Ver and Charlie Shrem, a cast of long bearded geniuses who kept this magic money safe, and of course the mysterious creator Mr Nakamoto. Things were weird, and grand, just the way I like them.
I bought my first bitcoin after the gox collapse, then more and more. If Mt gox couldn't kill bitcoin I wanted in. I watched it go to 300, then to 500, and was thrilled. I found bitcoin. I subbed a bunch of tech nerds on twitter. I remained on the outside, but I was now part of the dream of decentralized currency. I placed a certain amount of blind faith in this new technology that I admittedly didn't fully understand, yet somehow believed in, hoping that one day it would change the world.
I soon became aware of forks, of factions, of discontent. I shrugged my shoulders. After all, I had long since learned that bitcoin was the honey badger and it would figure it out. It always does. I learned to laugh at "bitcoin is dead" headlines and learned that this was simply a cue to buy more. There was Hodl. There was, buy the dip. There was always that lame ass on reddit reminding nubes (in nasally tone I'm sure) to "never buy more than you can afford to lose". There was the cute roller coaster coin guy which seemed to be so often on a fun ride to the top. I was riding this thing to the top with that little guy. Life was good. I was invested far more than I could afford to lose and life was great that way!
But then the more I read, the more 'in the know' guys I followed on twitter, the more reddit posts I read, I learned I would be forced to pick sides in an ideological battle between two distinct sides. Let's call them the nerds, and the capitalists. Being an anarchist/libertarian and capitalist it might seem strange that I found myself quickly taking the sides of the nerds. But it was the nerds who were the ones who kept all this shit together. The code, the security, the teflon armor that kept governments and crony capitalists out of bitcoin and who ultimately kept that little roller coaster guy going up and up and up. Life was good in the hands of the nerds. I was officially a small blocker, and I stood behind my nerds. I resented those who called them neckbeards. I have a beard and that was mean. Sometimes I chimed in on reddit posts, mocked big blockers on twitter, and firmly planted my feet on the rock of 1mb blocks. I would not be moved.
Then the fork happened. I was happy to receive my dividend. I even rushed out to sell some of my coins and sold a few but my gut resisted selling all of them. Something stopped me. That something was the instinctual recognition of the echo chamber of the small block community. It was beginning to scare me. Was this really where the sharp money was? I was beginning to wonder. I was beginning to doubt.
There was also the fact that I simply couldn't get my head around bigger blocks meaning less fees for the miners yet somehow the biggest miner in the world was such a staunch advocate of bigger blocks, all while more and more people were pouring into mining. I heard about side chains and lighting network. Boy did that sound good! But where was it? Where is it? When will it be delivered? Why isn't this ready yet with all this congestion? Do we really have the best nerds working on this problem? It's been like 9 years. What's up with this?
The answers and future promises of core, I had to admit seemed a bit vague at best. Transactions were getting clogged. There would not be a day ever in the future that I would buy a coffee with my bitcoin (ok ok). But there would also never be a day that someone busting their hump washing our dishes in expensive restaurants would be able to send their bitcoin home to a family that could really use them. It was too expensive. And new leaders in the space like Ari Paul were touting $100 fees as a sign of huge success. Was this what I signed up for? Was this the face of decentralization and borderless money?
But you have to have faith in the nerds, right? After all, they're nerds! And they were the ones that got us here. Or were they? I started to notice a complete disrespect for the companies that helped bitcoin grow to what it had; there was Jeremy Allaire, Brian Armstrong, Eric Vorhees, Gavin Andreson and Vinny Lingham, all thrown UNDER the bus and mercilessly at that. Profits were suddenly bad. Growth bad. Low fees, yup-bad. Appreciation for the risk some of these early pioneers took was non existent. And this didn't sit well with me. Why were these nerds so angry? Where was the respect? Where was the appreciation? Where was the loyalty to the men that helped the little roller coaster guy go so high? Why did you so quickly renege on the NY agreement once you got what you wanted; segwit. Only dishonest pussies do that kind of thing. A bigger question started to emerge in my head: what had these small block nerds done to improve on Bitcoin that a slightly different alternative group of nerd couldn't have done? Why couldn't' we just go to 2mb blocks for the time being? What if the small block nerds were wrong? Is there a shortage of nerds in this world? Maybe. But maybe not.
I started to get back to my roots. To dig beneath the bullshit and take a shovel to dig through the propaganda, and it's deep in this war. There's a lot at stake here. If there's one thing I've learned in the years I've been an anarchist there's one rule I have which trumps them all: Never trust the popular narrative. Because it's usually dead wrong. And often, it's actually a well crafted lie. But here I was on the 'popular' side. Ut oh, not good. Had I been fooled?
Now I'm not saying I'm fully in the big block camp. If I have been brainwashed, then I'll admit it's going to take more time to deprogram myself and begin to see things more clearly. However, I am starting to see a bit more clearly. What I do know is this; Tone Vays the famous bitcoin tout said BCH was going to zero within a day. That never came close to happening. Stick to massage parlors Tone. Men I respect and look up to (in certain ways) like Roger Ver, John McAfee, Jeff Berwick - all men with a provable TRACK RECORD of defying the government in one way or another and the criminal records to prove it (good thing in my book), and many other freedom loving anarchist types are all behind Bitcoin Cash. The small block community foams at the mouth like a demon in first century Galillee when you mention the name Roger Ver. Hmmm. Maybe he really is Bitcoin Jesus! Miners who let's face it, love money, put up their capital to invest in many many millions want to see bitcoin cash succeed. Vinny Lingham was thrown to the dogs by a ruthless community, for urging people to have an open mind and getting one BTC call wrong. The whole thing has at minimum, put a bad taste in my mouth.
Then there's the fact that some of the main core developers work for a large insurance company's company called Blockstream. If you really believed in bitcoin, shouldn't you own enough to not have to work for someone? I don't work for anyone, and I'm not a neckbeard nerd. But even I figured that much out and got some bitcoins early enough that I don't have to punch any one else's time clock. And while I'm never one to shy away from conspiracies there is the fact that the CEO of the big insurance company; AXA (who owns Blockstream who employs heavy hitters from the nerd Core group) is none other than Henri de Castries, who just so happens to be the chairman of the Bilderberg Group. You might think I made that last one up. I didn't. This just smells bad to me. I think a lot of people on the nerd, Core, block stream, blah blah blah side might be, just might be getting DUPED.
So, in closing I would like to apologize to the community. You can see, I'm not that active here or in bitcoin, but I have taken some stabs and even trolled a few of you. Hey, please forgive me, I thought I was on the right side, but I'm not so certain any more. One thing I did do is load up on some bitcoin cash. I paid a premium for it, and maybe I'll live to regret it. But I'm throwing my hat in with the successful capitalists, the anarchists, and people who believed in bitcoin enough in the beginning to not only buy (and maybe mine some), but to invest their lives in the space, to put their money where their mouth and beliefs were, and not have to go get a job working for some Bilderberger clown. The clues and the truth are always there folks, but you do have to search them out for yourself and more importantly, T H I N K. Sure I'm a bit late to the party, and I'm still not sure BCH will become the 'real bitcoin', but I'm moving some of my most valuable chips to this side of the table. I sense a strong rising tide here. I also just sent 30k worth of BCH for 2 cents and it was on the exchange in like 3 minutes. That felt like the good ole days and that felt good! And then there's the fact that when it all comes down to it, and despite the attempted slander meme circulating on twitter, I rather enjoy a glass of wine one day with Roger Ver and Jeff Berwick, Calvin Ayre (and maybe even fake Satoshi) than have my picture taken outside a Chucky Cheese with a group of nerds with small blocks.

Purpose of Writing
Since posting FUD is so ridiculously low-effort in comparison to setting the record straight, I felt it necessary to put a log of copy-pastas together to balance the scales so its just as easy to answer the FUD as it was to generate it. So next time you hear someone say "IOTA is centralized", you no longer have to take an hour out of your day and spin your wheels with someone who likely had an agenda to begin with. You just copy-paste away and move on.
It's also worth mentioning IOTA devs are too damn busy working on the protocol and doing their job to answer FUD. So I felt a semblance of responsibility.
Here they are. These answers are too my understanding so if you see something that doesn't look right let me know! They are divided into the following categories so if you are interested in a specific aspect of IOTA you can scroll to that section.

WALLET

IOTA was hacked and users funds were stolen!

First, IOTA was not hacked. The term “hacked” is thrown around way too brazingly nowadays and often used to describe events that weren’t hacks to begin with. Its a symptom of this space growing way too fast creating situations of the blind leading the blind and causing hysteria.
What happened:
Many IOTA users trusted a certain 3rd party website to create their seed for their wallets. This website silently sent copies of all the seeds generated to an email address and waited till it felt it had enough funds, then it took everyones money simultaneously. That was the ”hack”.

The lesson:
The absolute #1 marketed feature of crypto is that you are your own bank. Of everything that is common knowledge about crypto, this is at the top. But being your own bank means you are responsible for the security of your own funds. There is no safety net or centralized system in place that is going to bail you out.
For those that don’t know (and you really should if you’ve invested in anything crypto), your seed is your username-pw-security question-backup email all rolled into one. Would you trust a no-name 3rd party website to produce your username+pw for your bank account? Because thats essentially what users did.
The fix:
Make your seed offline with the generators in the sidebar or use dice. This is outlined in the “how to generate wallet and seed” directly following.
The trinity and carriota wallets will have seed generators within them upon their release.

How to generate wallet and seed

3) Do not run any apps in conjunction with the trinity app. Make sure all other apps are completely closed out on your device.

Are you sure a computer can’t just guess my seed?

An IOTA seed is 81 characters long. There are more IOTA seed combinations than atoms in the universe. All the computers in the world combined would take millions billions of years just to find your randomly generated one that’s located somewhere between the 0th and the 2781st combination. The chance for someone to randomly generate the exact same seed as yours is 1 / (2781).

That’s just the nature of this business. Everyone in these communities has money at stake and are extremely incentivized to keep only positive news at the top of the front page. There is nothing you're going to do about that on this subreddit or any crypto subreddit. It's just a reddit fact of life we have to deal with. Everyone has a downvote and everyone has an upvote. But what can be done is just simply answer the questions even if they are downvoted to hell. Yea most people wont' see the answers or discussion but that one person will. every little bit counts.
I will say that there are most certainly answers to nearly every FUD topic out there. Every single one. A lot of the posts I'm seeing as of late especially since the price spike are rehashed from months ago. They are often not answered not because there isn't an answeexplanation, but because regulars who have the answers simply don't see them (for the reason listed above). I can see how it's easy for this to be interpreted (especially by new users) as there not being an answer or "the FUDsters are on to something" but thats just not the case.

IOTA Devs do not respond appropriately to criticism

When critiquers provide feedback that is ACTUALLY useful to the devs, then sure they'll be glad to hear it. So far not once has an outside dev brought up something that the IOTA devs found useful. Every single time it ends up being something that was already taken into consideration with the design and if the critiquer did an ounce of research they would know that. Thus you often find the IOTA devs dismissing their opinion as FUD and responding with hostility because all their critique is really doing is sending the message to their supporters that they are not supposed to like IOTA anymore.
Nick Johnson was a perfect example of this. The Ethereum community was co-existing [peacefully]with IOTA’s community (as they do with nearly all alt coins) until Nick wrote his infamous article. Then almost overnight Ethereum decided it didn’t like IOTA anymore and we’ve been dealing with that shit since. As of today, add LTC to that list with Charlie’s (even admitting) ignorant judgement of IOTA.
12/17/2017: Add John McAfee (bitcoin cash) and Peter Todd (bitcoin) to the list of public figures who have posted ignorantly on IOTA.

A lot of crypto communities certainly like to hate on IOTA...

IOTA is disrupting the disrupters. It invented a completely new distributed ledger infrastructure (the tangle) that replaces the blockchain and solves all of its fundamental problems (namely fees and scaling). To give you an idea of this significance, 99% of the cryptocurrencies that exist are built on a block chain. These projects have billions of dollars invested into them meaning everyone in their communities are incentivized to see IOTA fail and spread as much FUD about it as possible. This includes well known organizations, public figures, and brands. Everyone commenting in these subreddits and crypto communities have their own personal money at stake and skin in the game. Misinformation campaigns, paid reddit posters, upvote/downvote bots, and corrupt moderators are all very real in this space.

How was IOTA distributed?

All IOTAs that will ever exist were sold at the ICO in 2015. There was no % reserved for development. Devs had to buy in with their personal money. Community donated back 5% of all IOTA so the IOTA foundation could be setup.

No inflation schedule? No additional coins? How is this sustainable?

Interestingly enough, IOTA is actually the only crypto that does not run into any problems with a currency cap and deflationaryism. Because there are zero fees, you will always be able to pay for something for exactly what it's worth using IOTA, no matter how small the value. If by chance in the future a single iota grows so large in value that it no longer allows someone to pay for something in fractions of a penny, the foundation would just add decimal points allowing for a tenth or a hundreth or a thousandth of an iota to be transacted with.
To give you some perspective, if a single IOTA equals 1 penny, IOTA would have a 27 trillion dollar market cap (100x that of Bitcoin's today)

Companies technically don’t have to use the IOTA token

Yes they do
Worth clarifying that 0 iota data transactions are perfectly fine and are welcomed since they still provide pow for 2 other transactions and help secure the network. In the early stages, these types of transactions will probably be what give us the tps/pow needed to remove the coordinator and allow the network defend 34% attacks organically.
But... if someone does not want to sell or exchange their data for free (0 IOTA transaction), then Dominic is saying that the IOTA token must be used for that or any exchange in value on the network.
This is inherently healthy for the ecosystem since it provides a neutral and non-profit middle ground that all parties/companies can trust. If one company made their own token it wouldn’t be trusted since companies are incentivized by profits and nothing is stopping them from manipulating their token to make them more money. Thus, the IOTA foundation will not partner with anyone who refuses to take this option off the table.

All these companies are going to influence IOTA development!!

These companies have no influence on the development of IOTA. They either choose to use it or they don’t.

Internet of things is cheap and will stay cheap

Internet of things is one application of IOTA and considered by many to be the 4th industrial revolution. Go do some googling. IOTA having zero fees enables M2M for the first time in history. Also, if a crypto can do M2M it sure as shit can do M2P and P2P. M2M is hard mode.

IOTA surpassing speculation

IOTA, through the data marketplace and [qubic](qubic.iota.org), will be the first crypto to surpass speculation and actually be used in the real world for something. From there, it will branch out into other use cases, such as P2P. Or maybe P2P use of IOTA will grow in parallel with M2M, because why not?

Investing in a new project barely off the ground

Investing in a project in its early stages was something typically reserved for wealthy individuals/organizations before ICO’s became a thing. With early investing comes much less hand holding and more responsibility on the user to know what they are doing. If you have a hard time accepting this responsibility, don’t invest and wait for the technology to get easier for you. How many people actually knew how to use and mine bitcoin in 2009 before it had all its gui infrastructure?
IOTA is a tangle, the first of its kind. NOT a copy paste blockchain. As a result wallets and applications for IOTA are the first of their kind and translating the tangle into a nice clean user-friendly blockchain experience for the masses is even more taxing.

Why is the price of my coin falling?!

This may be the most asked question on any crypto subreddit but it's also the easiest to explain. The price typically falls when bad things happen to a coin or media fabricates bad news about a coin and a portion of investors take it seriously. The price increases when good things happen to a coin, such as a new exchange listing or a partnership announced etc.. The one piece that is often forgotten but trumps all these effects is something called "market forces".
Market forces is what happens to your coin when another coin gets a big news hit or a group of other coins get big news hits together. For example, when IOTA data marketplace released, IOTA hit a x5 bull run in a single week. But did you notice all the other alt coins in the red? There are a LOT of traders that are looking at the space as a whole and looking to get in on ANY bull action and will sell their other coins to do so. This effect can also be compounded over a long period of time such as what we witnessed when the bitcoin fork FOMO was going on and alt coins were squeezed continuously to feed it for weeks/months.
These examples really just scratch the surface of market forces but the big takeaway is that your coin or any coin will most certainly fall (or rise) in price at the result of what other coins are doing, with the most well known example being bitcoin’s correlation to every coin on the market. If you don't want to play the market-force game or don't have time for it, then you can never go wrong buying and holding.
It's also important to note that there are layers of investors. There's a top layer of light-stepping investors that are a mixture of day traders and gamblers trying to jump in and jump out to make quick money then look for the next buying (or shorting) opportunity at another coin. There's a middle layer of buyers and holders who did their research, believe in the tech and placing their bets it will win out in the long run. And the bottom layer are the founders and devs that are in it till the bitter end and there to see the vision realized. When a coin goes on a bull run, always expect that any day the top layer is going to pack up and leave to the next coin. But the long game is all about that middle layer. That is the layer that will be giving the bear markets their price-drop resistance. That is why the meme "HODL" is so effective because it very elegantly simplifies this whole concept for the common joe and makes them a part of that middle layer regardless if they understand whats going on or not.

TECHNICAL

How is IOTA free and how does it scale

IOTA is an altruistic system. Proof of work is done in IOTA just like bitcoin. Only a user’s device/phone must do pow for 2 other transactions before issuing one of its own. Therefore no miners and no fees. And the network becomes faster the more transactions are posted. Because of this, spamming the network is encouraged since they provide pow for 2 other transactions and speed up the network.

IOTA is centralized

IOTA is more decentralized than any blockchain crypto that relies on 5 pools of miners, all largely based in China. Furthermore, the coordinator is not a server in the dev’s basement that secretly processes all the transactions. It’s several nodes all around the globe that add milestone transactions to show the direction of the IF’s tangle within the DAG so people don’t accidentally follow a fork from a malicious actor. Anyone with the know-how can fork the tangle right now with a double-spend. But no one would follow their fork because the coordinator reveals which tangle is the legit IF one. If the coordinator wasn’t there (assuming low honest-transaction volume), there would be no way to discern which path to follow especially after the tangle diverges into forks of forks. Once throughout of honest transactions is significant enough, the “honest tangle” will replace the coordinated one and people will know which one to follow simply because it’s the biggest one in the room.
Referencing the coordinator is also optional.
Also, if you research and understand how IOTA intends to work without the coordinator, it’s easier to accept it for now as training wheels. I suggest reading pg 15 and on of the white paper analyzing in great depth how the network will defend different attack scenarios without a coordinator. For the past several months, IOTA foundation has been using St Petersburg college’s super computer to stress test IOTA and learn when they can turn the coordinator off. There will likely be a blog about the results soon.

How do nodes scale? How on earth can all that data be stored?

Full nodes store, update and verify from the last snapshot, which happens roughly every month. Its on the roadmap to make snapshotting automatic and up to each full node’s discretion.With automatic snapshots, each full node will act as a partial perma-node and choose when to snapshot its tangle data. If someone wants to keep their tangle data for several months or even years, they could just choose not to snapshot. Or if they are limited on hard drive space, they could snapshot every week.
Perma-nodes would store the entire history of the tangle from the genesis. These are optional and would likely only be created by companies who wish to sell historical access of the tangle as a service or companies who heavily use the tangle for their own data and want to have quick, convenient access to their data’s history.

Cryptocurrencies and the circle of competence

A quick note to investors that believe the intrinsic value of bitcoin is 0 because they can't do a DCF on it: this isn't the place to argue with me about it. I suggest you read a bit more about what it actually is (hint: not a currency). I've defended its value in plenty of other posts on this sub. It's a $40+ billion market, so at least a few people agree with me. I welcome you to short the crypto of your choice if you think it's worth nothing. This is a post for folks that believe that cryptocurrencies have at least some discernible value and are considering investing in them.

Given the tripling of the cryptocurrency market cap in the last few months and the 3- to 10-fold increases in virtually every major altcoin, cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and of course Bitcoin have been getting a stunning amount of attention in the press and on this subreddit recently.
If you follow the cryptocurrency world closely, you know that there have been a huge amount of dubious ICOs (initial coin offerings) on the market recently. It's an explosive time in crypto.
It's also a frustrating time for many long term bitcoiners and crypto fans, because we're faced with a barrage of questions from outsiders who see the returns and want to buy in to the "next big thing" and make a quick buck. This is a warning to those people.
Everyone is a genius is a rising market. It's hard to go wrong these days in crypto. Even coins of dubious merit like Ripple, Dogecoin, Stellar, NEM were pumped 5 times without any fundamental change. Speculators/investors have thrown money at crypto indiscriminately and efficient markets have 100% broken down. The altcoin pump right now is roughly comparable to the Dot Com crisis of the early 2000s.

  3. A surge of IPOs (ICOs) occurs to capitalize on this
  4. "Greater fool" traders pile in, thinking they can make money even if the underlying is unsound
  5. Analysts claim "this time is different" while seasoned old hands refuse to participate
  6. Tech is proven not to be as developed as everyone thinks, market tanks
  7. Select few decent companies survive, all the trash is destroyed
  8. Tech eventually fulfills expectations, 10 years later, but none of the investors from the early days make money on it
However, canny (and skeptical) investors can still make money on crypto, as cryptocurrencies are inevitable, and will continue to expand and proliferate, even when the altcoin crash comes.
Something to realize first of all is that the crypto market is heterogeneous. It has straightforward cryptocurrencies (bitcoin, litecoin, dash, monero), smart-contract cryptos (ethereum, ethereum classic) and a whole bunch of crypto tokens that follow dedicated platforms (golem, augur, steem). Not mentioned are ripple and stellar because they aren't really cryptocurrencies at all.
The investing theses for all of these categories is radically different. The measure of success for a currency or store of value is adoption, merchant use, low volatility, a large network, and real world acceptance as something worth owning. Bitcoin has this right now, which is why it's more than 50% of the ecosystem, and none of its competitors are even close. Monero, Zcash, and Dash are a special case in that they try and make transactions anonymous and privacy, allowing for use cases on the darknet markets, for instance.
The tech underlying bitcoin is essentially sound, although it is having a scalability crisis, which you should read about. It can't right now serve as a currency which will buy you a cup of coffee - the transaction fees are too high. However if you want to send $200,000 from Mexico to Indonesia or China to the Philippines, you can do it within 20 minutes, and with fees of a few dollars. And if you want to store your wealth in a vault that is totally secure, and cannot be debased by a central bank, bitcoin is a good bet. This is highly relevant to folks in India that just had cash abolished, to Venezuelans, to Argentines, to Cypriots, to Nigerians, anywhere local currencies are weak and volatile. The potential value of a competing cryptocurrency lies in whether it can improve materially on bitcoin, whether it means incorporating off-chain scaling (segwit with litecoin), making it more private and fungible (monero), automating governance (decred), and so on.
Then there are cryptoassets that incorporate smart contracts. These – ethereum and its derivatives – exploded when the SEC denied the Bitcoin ETF back in march and bitcoiners got worried and started diversifying. This is the market segment that is highly risky, even by crypto standards, in my opinion. Ethereum is a protocol that allows contracts to self-enforce. Programming power to run the contracts is paid for with ethereum. Two parties agree to a contract, and it then self-executes. It's secured by a decentralized computing network of ethereum miners, so the contracts cannot be shut down by a government or corporation. It's pretty clever. Last year, a $150+ million contract was drawn up with ethereum, which would act like a venture capital fund, picking good investments just based on the votes of the token holders. This was called a Decentralized Autonomous Organization, and it was hacked before it could do anything. Well, it was exploited based on the code and so the exploit was totally "fair" given that the contract was meant to be inevitable, once agreed to. However, the creators of Ethereum didn't like the idea of losing $50 million, so they decided to collectively agree to amend the rules of the protocol itself (violating "Code is Law"), and jump onto a new one, which they would also call Ethereum, although it was really Ethereum 2.0. Some people got upset by this, because they thought that immutability and not arbitrarily rolling back the code was more important than some investors losing money because of poorly written code. They created Ethereum Classic, which is the original Ethereum chain. This wasn't what the Ethereum 2.0 folks thought would happen, but it did happen, so there are two competing Ethereum chains now.
Eventually, lots of decentralized apps were funded, via tokensales. A development team would say: "we're going to use ethereum to create a decentralized cloud computing/AI/prediction/gambling/timestamping/social media network." And then investors would buy the tokens, expecting that eventually the dev team would deliver, and the tokens would be in demand, since they would be required to use the network. It's a bit like buying in-game-currency when the game is announced, anticipating that the game would be wildly popular and you'd be able to sell it on later at a profit or acquire it cheaply to buy in-game items later on. However, many of us think that the promises are a bit extravagant, and that investors in these ICOs are probably going to lose money. The incentives aren't well aligned. Founders can just not deliver and run off with the money, and there's no regulatory body to enforce that. And for Ethereum more broadly, many people are worried that the turing-completeness of the language will mean it will face serious threats and unforeseeable hacks, like with the DAO. Finally, Ethereum has increased from around $20 to $90 in a matter of months, which raises the question of whether a) the market realized its true value or b) it was pumped on speculation. There's a huge set of unknowns with a smart contract currency, and virtually none of the promised dapps are up and running right now, and the ones that are haven't really attracted large userbases or delivered. This is because the tech is in its infancy, and the developers are still learning how to use it properly. So we won't know if these sorts of decentralized networks are even possible to create on the timelines that investors are expecting. Therefore, ethereum investors buying it on the promise of the realization of this tech in the near future are almost guaranteed to be disappointed. Additionally, ethereum is making the switch to the largely untested Proof of Stake algorithm, which will change incentives that secure the network. This brings me to my key point:
Stay within your circle of competence. You can grow your circle – slowly. Cryptoassets are almost impossibly complex to grasp with just a cursory look. Investing in them requires weeks of reading and a very skeptical view.
The above was an introduction to cryptocurrencies, the different ones on offer, and why investing in ethereum is not the slam dunk everyone thinks it is. This portion of the post will tell you about the kind of due diligence you need to do if you want to invest, rather than speculate, in crypto.
The first thing to mention is that passive investing in crypto has historically been a terrible strategy. Just buying bitcoin almost always outperformed. This was due to the poor set of altcoins, and the size of bitcoin's almost insurmountable network effect. This sort of changed in March and April when bitcoin's dominance went from 80% to ~50%, and it remains to be seen if this will persist or not. But the point is, buying the index is usually an awful strategy in crypto, particularly because there are so many truly awful projects out there.
So what does it take to invest responsibly in cryptocurrencies? It requires at least a basic understanding of three disciplines: public-private key cryptography; programming, and how open-source projects function; and economics, particularly game theory and the quantity theory of money. This is why is is so difficult to apprehend easily: because very few people actually boast a sincere understanding of these three topics. I certainly don't.
You need to be able to determine whether the tech is actually going anywhere, and whether the task the developers have set themselves is possible or realistic. You need to know how open source networks are governed, and which models strike the best balance between efficiency of decision-making and fair consensus. You need to be able to measure the inflation schedule of the cryptocurrency, and see whether your coins are going to inflated away. You need to be able to make plausible guesses about the potential market for the crypto and estimate future values. Note that the payoff structure is not equity-like. It's more like early stage venture capital, or buying loss-making biotech companies. Here's my checklist of questions to answer, ordered by importance:
  • Does the project offer a significant improvement over its nearest competitor, or a reasonable chance of success in its stated aim? Is there a demand for this project? Does it have a concise and reasonable goal? (Narrower goal: higher likelihood of success).
  • Is the development team competent? Are they committed to the coin? What's their track record? Is is an active dev team? Do they have a roadmap for the future? Are they transparent about goals?
  • How is the development team funded? Is the currency corporate-backed? Is the funding transparent? Was the coin significantly premined? (Usually bad) Are developers paid via iterative community project crowdfunding? (Usually good).
  • What is the governance structure of the currency? Who holds ultimate control over decisionmaking? How are decisions made? Are they transparent? Are mining/developer incentives aligned?
  • Does the asset have acceptance and use today? Does it have a functioning use case? If it doesn't, does it have a decent chance of being accepted?
  • Has the asset's "market cap" tripled or quintupled in the last few months? Was this based on any fundamental changes (new software releases, etc) or just speculation?
  • What are the transaction volumes like? (Hint: divide market cap by monthly averaged daily on-chain tx volume to find a consistent ratio) What's the ratio of on-chain transaction versus exchange speculation? Has price gone up independent of transaction volumes?
  • How long has the asset been around? Think of the Lindy effect. Older is usually better.
  • What's the community like? Is there censorship? Does it have an active subreddit? Do the developers answer questions? Are they accessible? How big is the github community? (Hint: you can divide market cap by github commits to find a comparable ratio).
  • Are you psychologically able to hold this coin in a 90% downturn? Is this a high conviction thesis or are you betting on being able to sell it to a greater fool?
How long did it take you to learn about investing in equities? Reading balance sheets, running DCF and DRI models, figuring out how to value a stock based on comparables? Years? How many mistakes did you make before you figured out how to be responsible?
Cryptos are an asset class that is both radically different from anything that has existed before. They are also incredibly heterogeneous, as I argued above. It also leads to cultism – so bitcoiners generally take a dim view of ethereum, and vice versa. Monero fans generally don't like dash, and so on. You have to keep your mind open to understand new opportunities as they arise, and to stop yourself becoming too mentally invested in your project of choice. The vast majority of projects will fail within 5 years, so becoming overly certain of the success of one will probably devastate you. If you can stay balanced, stay honest about your crypto's chances of success and adoption, not get tunnel vision, and not take overly risky positions, you have a good chance of not losing everything. Remember the payoff structure. Heavily rightward skewed. A ton of cryptos earn no return and a select few earn an absurd (1,000-10,000x) return.
None of this is necessary if you just want to invest randomly in one of the top ten cryptos. That's the strategy of 95% of investors today. Pick a coin and go. If it's not bitcoin, I can pretty much guarantee you'll lose money. The newer, the worse.
I've not made an effort to convince you that cryptos have intrinsic value. If you've made it this far, you probably think they're worth something at least. However, they're probably not worth as much as the market is pricing them at right now. Especially not those in the ethereum family. I'm not going to tell you what to invest in, because that would defeat the purpose of this post. I'm telling you to do your due diligence before blindly buying a crypto. And that due diligence on ethereum is as complex and difficult as Tesla or Amazon DD. And that your skills in equity valuation are pretty much useless in this asset class. My circle of competence doesn't extend to options or lean pork futures, so I don't touch those. I suggest that until you really feel comfortable in crypto, you don't buy randomly.

I can tell that I struck a nerve. This post isn't really about ethereum - it's about how to do research in crypto, and why you can't expect to profit handsomely without that due diligence. I mentioned ethereum because there are 3 or 4 breathless posts on here a day about its stunning gains and whether it's worth investing in. My answer: read about it first, from a diverse set of sources. A final note: I do not own any ethereum classic, I have never owned ethereum classic. I brought it up because it is part of the ethereum story, and an example of what happens when you have a contested hard fork. I do hope that ethereum succeeds, I am just cautioning against over exuberance.
