Samourai Bitcoin Wallet & Sentinel Watch Only

The Samourai are privacy activists who have dedicated our lives to creating the software that Silicon Valley will never build, the regulators will never allow, and the VC's will never invest in. We build the software that Bitcoin deserves.

I downloaded the latest of [Samourai Wallet]1 (not from Play Store, but from an online APK I found, as I do not have Play Store installed on my phone).

You should never download Samourai Wallet from non-official/shady webpages. They provide the SHA-256 key of the official APK so you can compare that with the APK which you have downloaded before installing it. ([[link]14 )

Two or three days ago, [they removed some privacy features from the wallet]3 because of stupid and irritating Google policies that everyone here hates. They said they were moving to F-Droid soon with the full-featured app. That was nice, but am I wrong or they could have done this before they were forced to trim the app? Devs already know Google was applying these pathetic policies, they just tried to apply for an exception — as stated on their blog post.

AFAIK Samourai Wallet added to Play Store ~2016. Google didn't had that policy back then it came out recently ([[link]15 ) If you know how F-Droid works its really slow to update apps since they build it their own and there are lots of apps to be build in general I am also a huge F-Droid fan don't forget to donate/contribute to F-Droid they are doing an awesome work. Samourai Wallet is still in Alpha and it needs to be updated regularly and be shared fast so Google Play is a decent way to do it also it helps to see statics (default by Google if you have Google Services installed on your phone Samourai don't include any trackers, their Exodus Privacy Report here: [[link]16 ) and improve the app fixing bugs etc. are easier since the feedback mechanism which Google Play has. Also a little but non-important thing is Samourai back-end is currently not open-sourced they are working on that if they would add it to F-Droid now they would probably marked as promoting non-free network not so important but a little note. (I don't mean here that their back-end open sourcing is not important the notice mark on F-Droid is not important. Please don't try to draw the subject here.) They will be added to F-Droid really soon once they hit stable and completely open sourced their back-end.

Another thing I found is people (users) openly contradicting the privacy statements made by Samourai — [this particular one]6 being the most “extreme”, as it comes from what it seems to be an eminence here. I know Bitcoin is not oriented towards privacy and that privacy is very difficult to implement, but this made me think: why, for example, cannot I connect to a trusted node without having to run a full node myself, specially configure it and use a VPN to connect to it? Why there seems to be an interest in promoting transaction casting through Samourai servers? Also, what are Ricochet, STONEWALL and PayNym? I suppose they are their implementation of different Bitcoin Improvement Proposals, but can they be trusted? Some users in this sub say there’s something shady with this app.

They stated that clearly and that's why they are still on Alpha. They have explained to these numerous times ([[link]17 ) Also that's really hard to be a light wallet as you stated that the safest way is running your own node to maximize your privacy. As I told this is why they are still in Alpha once they release their back-end you can run their implementation on your full node and fully bypass their infrastructure. They are also working on a plug&play node ([[link]18 ) For their Ricochet, Stonewall and Paynym features you can have a look at their webpages. ([[link]19 , [[link]20 , [[link]21 ) They are all open-sourced features and processed on the client, not on their servers.

Then, there is [this serious claim]12 from a user saying that Samourai Wallet lost some of his bitcoins. I won’t get into details, but it was kind of scary to me since other users told him they were in the same situation.

Welcome to the Bitcoin world while financial sovereignty is something awesome it comes with huge responsibility don't going to list here examples which people lost a ton of bitcoins from paper wallets, other wallets, mistakes etc. I remember that guy as you can see in the comments Samourai team tried to help him also I and my friends tried to help him lots of hours (the chat history is available on Telegram group if someone wants to see it feel free to join and read it its pretty long btw) I invited him to the group ([[link]22 ) and he was a pretty good guy he didn't accused Samourai but just wanted help. The Github repository is there you can search the code/commit history and see that there is nothing wrong in private key generation the problem isn't on the Samourai side.

[HIRING] Web-APK bitcoin wallet

Please, DO NOT BID - unless you FIRST diligently answer the 7 following questions (otherwise, your bid will be discarded). These 7 questions must first be answered before any further conversation may take place. Thanks for understanding.
1) What did you understand as being the very purpose/essence of my project (see description below: "MY PROJECT IN A NUTSHELL")?
2) Which existing bitcoin wallets do you consider the best at this time - and why?
3) Which bitcoin projects oand wallets have you developed so far (please explain precisely what you did)?
4) How long will it take, and how much will it cost to develop my project?
5) Who will be the individual who will actually be the software developer of my project?
6) Will this individual be busy with other projects while working on mine and up until it is fully completed?
7) Are you and/or this individual willing to sign an NDA?
MY PROJECT IN A NUTSHELL
Using a functional UI, I need a simple:
*Responsive website (i.e. multi-browsers and platforms);
*APK for a gap machine.
The responsive website allows the:
*Creation of a bitcoin unsigned transaction (one sending address, three recipients) with modular mining fee;
*Loading of a signed transaction, its preview, and its broadcast.
*Monitoring of watch-only addresses.
The gap machine's APK allows the:
*Generation of legacy/segwit [address, private key] from a user-generated passphrase, and their related safekeeping.
*Signing of raw unsigned transactions.
All exchanges between the website and the gap machine are primarily done via QRcode.
Wallet architecture, and design of most screens have already been developed.

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.
That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, XMR.TO and MorphToken. These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:
  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.
Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.
You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.
If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.
Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.
Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.
To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

The state of cryptocurrency in China. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are lying.

It's been a while since I outlined the state of cryptocurrency in China, but I should probably tell you guys why this is important first: Journalists will do anything to shill you their "news" so they can get their sponsor dollars. Crypto YouTubers who comment on the story without reading the original news story or transpiration of events in Chinese further distort this message. With that out of the way, let's dive in to free knowledge.
-Mining is just fine, so long as miners have all of their documents properly registered. The Chinese government thinks, "Whatever, sell this stuff to foreigners. We'll gladly let more USD flow in to our economy in exchange for thin air." -Most Chinese-owned exchanges set up offices abroad, usually in Singapore. Some have dev teams in Malaysia / Taiwan. -The Chinese government hasn't really out-right BANNED crypto ownership as far as I know, but they have certainly made it very difficult to own it. Which leads me to these two points: -I tried sending an APK file for an android phone wallet app to an American buddy of mine and his Chinese-made phone with a specialized Chinese distro of android would not allow him to install it. He sent me a screenshot that showed his phone basically displayed, "Unable to install application." or something similar. -I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Chinese-made distros of Windows, Linux, or Macintosh-specific operating systems do not allow users to install wallets to their desktops either - but I have not verified this. -These last two points can be circumvented by buying phones and operating systems made for foreign countries on China's ebay equivalent, Taobao. -There have been previous court-rulings where bitcoin was recognized as PROPERTY. -My view is that the CCP's attitude is, "Less crypto, less headache. Turn it in to USD and bring it in to China." -I would not be surprised to learn that later down the road the CCP makes a list of present cryptocurrencies that may be bought and sold legally in China in the future. I would only be shocked if bitcoin were not on that list. -It is commonplace for employees of exchanges to get paid in crypto in China. This is usually done with a stablecoin. -I have an undergraduate degree in Chinese and previously worked for a Chinese-owned exchange. This is where my knowledge comes from. -Everything listed here to this point in time should be treated like "law" unless Xi Jinping himself or another government official say otherwise in the near future.
Any questions? Fire away.

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

Danger: Be Careful with Samourai Wallet

The BIP39 derivation key from some versions looks like to be wrong. Previously, I had used the same paper backup to recover it (18 months ago) from an old phone that broke the screen.
Recently I migrated my phone (which bricked) to a new one. Both the backup and the BIP 39 did provide the same set of addresses.
I asked the Support, and for the second time (the first time I payed more than 300$ in fees due to a Replace by Fee order was called as a CPFP without my previous consensus), I had a terrible experience with them, they did not even reply explaining possible solutions.
The aforementioned explanation is what I suggest that happened due to some experience I have as developer.
Another thing I asked them was to provide to me the releases of the previous versions and they said they would not provide that on email. They suggest me to look at their github release (I believe I would be able to compile their project and try to create the Android Apk, but I did not try because it would surely consume time, and luckily I had the option to try with the old screen broken phone).
The repaired old phone had the software installed and configured, then, with the pin I was able to rescue the bitcoins.
In summary, from now on, I do not plan to use none of the softwares developed by them anymore. The communication is terrible and lost my credibility.
I understand that the software is not Beta but some core features should already be stable.
In this sense, it is surely hard to me to keep trusting in their team.
Use hardware or paper wallets (generate public keys offline and save them) if you want to hold as a reserve. If you have recommendation for a trustable Android one it would be good to hear.
